Description
The cannon smoke of the American Revolution still fresh in the air, Noah Webster realized that "a national language is a band of national union." Common spellings and pronunciations not only would help unite the thirteen colonies, but they would also further break the bond with England. And Noah Webster would help with his dictionaries, textbooks, and other cultural and political achievements. Noah Webster is particularly relevant today. He insisted that every American speak the same language. However, he celebrated and welcomed new words contributed by all groups, whether they were ethnic, scientific, or cultural. Webster himself spoke more than twenty languages. Webster did more than take the u out of colour and switch the re in theatre. He championed universal education, the abolition of slavery, and American history, literature, and science. His works and influences will live on.
