If you give a mouse a cookie: A little boy offers a mouse a cookie and a chain reaction is set in motion, illustrating how one thing leads to another. Owen: Owen's parents try to get him to give up his favorite blanket before he starts school, but when their efforts fail, they come up with a solution that makes everyone happy. Two old potatoes and me: After a young girl finds two old potatoes at her father's house, they plant and tend them to see if they will have new potatoes in September. Mr. George Baker: Harry sits on the porch with Mr. George Baker, an African American who is one hundred years old but can still dance and play the drums, waiting for the school bus that will take them both to the class where they are learning to read.

Animal café: A tale about a cat and dog who operate a third shift restaurant for all the animals in their neighborhood while keeping it a secret from their human owner. The tortoise and the hare: Aesop's fable of an arrogant rabbit that's over confident that he can beat a determined turtle in a foot race. Ludlow laughs: A tale about a man who never smiled at all until one strange night when he started to laugh out loud. Giving thanks: A poem of greeting that native Americans say each day to bless the earth and pray for all the gifts they have been given by respecting the planet.
