In 1976, a young woman in Krakow is making her diploma film, looking behind the scenes at the life of a 1950s bricklayer, Birkut. She studies his stint as a proletariat hero, how that heroism was created, and what became of him.

Abandoned by his mother at the age of 8, Marcel is raised by his loving grandfather, Pascual. But when he turns 21 and prepares to move out, starting a new life with his girlfriend, he must choose between caring for Pascual, who has become sick with old age, and pursuing his dreams and desires.

Based on the true story of Aidee González, a mother determined to raise her children with her partner in the Mexican border town of Tecate. Aidee works as an exotic dancer providing for her family. One day her partner shares her desire to have a child of her own, and convinces Aidee to go on the hunt for a conceiver for a child.
